Falmouth
Situated beside The Carrick Roads, Falmouth is set in an area of outstanding beauty. Built on the waterfront, with its bustling streets and 'packet' harbour it holds many attractions for visitors, including museums, art galleries, an Arts Centre, antique and book shops.
Ellen Macarthur sailed into Falmouth at the end of her record breaking journey around the world, on February 8th 2005. Falmouth is one of the largest towns in Cornwall. Founded in Elizabethan times, it is really three places historically and visually; harbour with fishing port, tourist resort and shipping yard. It is situated on the estuary to seven rivers and guarded by two forts built by Henry VIII to protect the Carrick Roads - Pendennis Castle in Falmouth and St. Mawes on the opposite shore. For 200 years the town was the base for the 'Packet Service' sailing ships. In 1827 about 40 packet ships were based in Falmouth, Today it is the host port to some of the world's top sailing events.
In 2008 Falmouth hosted the Fuenchal Tall Ships Race attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The National Maritime Museum has recently opened in Falmouth and is a source of much interest and information. It nestles on the harbour side with magnificent views of Falmouth and the Carrick Roads.
